McDonald’s Philippines has expanded its electricity supply partnership with Vivant Energy’s COREnergy to cover 23 additional restaurants across the Visayas and Mindanao, the companies said.
The agreement covers 10 restaurants in Leyte and Western Visayas and 13 in Northern Mindanao and the Davao Region, representing a combined contestable load of about 2.2 megawatts.
The expansion brings the number of operating McDonald’s restaurants supplied by COREnergy to 59.
McDonald’s is tapping the Philippines’ Retail Competition and Open Access framework, which allows qualified consumers to choose their electricity supplier. Through the Retail Aggregation Program, businesses can combine multiple electricity accounts and collectively purchase power from a licensed retail electricity supplier.
Electricity accounts for about 72% of McDonald’s Philippines’ utility costs. Initial estimates indicate that participating restaurants could reduce their monthly electricity expenses by about 10% to 14% each, the companies said.
“McDonald’s remains committed to keeping the value and affordability our customers expect within reach,” McDonald’s Philippines Managing Director Margot Torres said.
“As we continue to grow our restaurant network, we’re also looking at ways to operate more efficiently and make thoughtful investments that support our business for the long term,” she added.
The fast-food chain aims to transition about 64% of its restaurants eligible for the Retail Aggregation Program by the end of the year. It also opened eight new restaurants in Cebu this year as part of its nationwide expansion.
COREnergy President Francis del Val said greater control and predictability over energy costs would allow businesses to focus more closely on operations, expansion and customer service.
“Behind every successful quick-service restaurant is an operation powered by reliable energy,” del Val said. “Reliable power is customer service.”
COREnergy is a licensed retail electricity supplier operated by Vivant Energy, the energy unit of Cebu-based Vivant Corp. The company has been expanding its supply operations beyond the Visayas to serve businesses in other parts of the southern Philippines.
